Mitsubishi Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine Takes on Borneo Safari

The Triton Will Participate As A Corporate Vehicle, Championed By Malaysia Motorsport Athlete, Leona Chin

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) is set to make a comeback into the Borneo Safari for the second consecutive year, but this time with the new Mitsubishi Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine, the first pick-up to offer an aluminium diesel engine! The Borneo Safari will take place from 30 October – 6 November in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The Borneo Safari needs no introduction to the world of adventure, having established a reputation over the past 26 years as one of the world’s toughest 4X4 expeditions.

It is an 8-day 4WD expedition through Northern Borneo, covering 1000 km of some of the most challenging and varied off-road terrains in the world.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, the official distributor of Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia is joining in the fray by sending 4 of its Triton 4X4 pick-up trucks, with 2 of it being the new Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine. Last year, MMM participated with one unit of Triton and have up the ante this year with an additional 3 units.

The New Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine Will Be Participating in the Borneo Safari 2016!

“Last year, we were very delighted that the all-new Triton VGT MT (Manual Transmission) had successfully completed the Borneo Safari! The event is known to be the world’s toughest 4X4 expeditions, hence we decided to rise up to the challenge and to conquer the trails of Borneo Safari once again, but with two additional new Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine VGT AT (Automatic Transmission) and VGT MT (Manual Transmission) variant respectively.” said Chief Executive Officer of MMM, Mr. Tomoyuki Shinnishi.

The new Triton will participate as a corporate vehicle, championed by Malaysia Motorsport Athlete, Leona Chin. Chin will be driving the new Triton AT variant into the off-road event.

“As a Mitsubishi Triton owner, I am excited to take on the Borneo Safari in the new Triton. I have been working with Mitsubishi on several events, and the Triton has proved itself through many tough situations with the new and powerful MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine. Being a first timer into the Borneo Safari, I am really looking forward to this gruelling event and I am confident that the Triton will be able to conquer the Borneo Safari once again this year!” said Chin.

“The engine performance has also been improved, with output now rising to 181 PS of power and 430 Nm of torque. With reduced kerb weight and increased power output, overall acceleration and driving performance has also been improved,” she added.

For the Borneo Safari off-road event, all Tritons will be fitted with the compulsory equipment such as winch, protection bars, recovery points, extreme tyres, suspension and snorkel.  The tyres for the Triton are sponsored by Giti tyres.

Last year, the Triton completed the endurance test in one piece. The Triton was sent into the Borneo Safari almost as standard as how it left the showroom floor. When the “as-stock-as-possible” Triton drove into the parking lot at Kota Kinabalu’s Hakka Hall for the closing dinner, all doubt was removed, as it has done its job.

After the Borneo Safari event last year, the purpose-built Triton has also completed several adventure drives in East Malaysia including the New Year 4×4 Jamboree event in Kuching and Bario, Sarawak as well as Kundasang, and the Tip of Borneo in Sabah with local 4×4 enthusiasts respectively.
