MINI continues to grow…and for better or worse, it’s growing in all sorts of ways under the care of the BMW Group, with their latest model, the 2016 MINI Clubman, being the brand’s largest vehicle yet. No, really…

This second-generation Clubman has been turned into a regular station wagon with 4 passenger doors while maintaining its predecessor’s irregular twin door arrangement at the rear.

At 4,253mm long, 1,800mm wide and 1,441mm tall, with a 2,670mm wheelbase, the new Clubman is 270mm longer and 73mm wider than the car it replaces.  It has 5 regular seats, while the luggage compartment that has grown to 360 liters (82 liters more than the hatch and 10 liters more than the Countryman) rising to 1,250 liters when the 60:40 or optional, 40:20:40 rear backseat, is folded down.

At launch, 3 different engines will be available for the Euro spec including a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo 3-cylinder that produces 134hp and 220Nm of torque – 230 Nm with overboost.  It enables the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9.1 seconds before hitting a top-speed of 205 km/h.

Buyers looking for something more powerful can opt for the MINI Cooper S Clubman which has a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine that develops 190hp and 280 Nm of torque – 300 Nm with overboost.  Thanks to the extra oomph, the model can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in as little as 7.1 seconds before topping out at 228 km/h.

On the diesel front, there’s the MINI Cooper D Clubman which has a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder diesel engine that churns out 148hp and 330Nm of torque. This allows the car to run from 0-100 km/h in as little as 8.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 212 km/h.

Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a standard 6-speed transmission while 8-speed Steptronic transmission is optionally available for the first time in the MINI Cooper S Clubman and MINI Cooper D Clubman. There’s also an optional 8-speed Steptronic sport transmission available for the MINI Cooper S Clubman while a 6-speed Steptronic transmission is an optional extra for the MINI Cooper Clubman.
