Honda officiates 2017 Civic Type R at Geneva, 306 hp 400 Nm

Honda have officially unveiled the production version of the 2017 Civic Type R at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The new car was earlier leaked here.

The tenth-generation Honda Civic Type R will go on sale in North America in late spring. This is the first ever Type R-badged Honda to be sold in the US, as earlier models featured the Si nameplate.

Underneath the new Civic Type R is the platform that’s shared with the tenth-generation Civic, with power coming from a 2.0-litre turbocharged i-VTEC engine that does 306 hp and 400 Nm, mated to a short-throw six-speed manual with rev matching.

Bespoke for the Civic Type R is the retuned springs, damper and bushing, a new Dual-Axis front suspension with aluminium lower arms and steering knuckles, aimed to reduce torque steer. There is also a new four-wheel Adaptive Suspension System with three-chamber dampers. On top of that, the dual-pinion electric power steering system has been retuned with variable gear ratios. The 2017 Civic Type R receives 245/30R20 Continental ContiSportContact 6 rubbers all round, with 350 mm cross-drilled rotors at the front and solid 305 mm rotors at the rear.

Thanks to the tenth-generation Civic underpinnings, the new 2017 model now boasts a far more rigid body with a 38 percent increase in torsional rigidity and 45 percent gain in bending rigidity. Compared to its predecessor, the new Type R is 16 kg, and 7 kg lighter than the regular Civic Hatchback.

The three drive modes, Comfort, Sport and +R make a return here, which can adjust steering and throttle response, transmission rev matching, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and the Adaptive Damper System.

Inside, the 2017 Honda Civic Type R will receive a 7-inch Display Audio infotainment system with Honda Navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Audio is backed by a 12-speaker 540 watt system. Other highlights include unique sports seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift boot, aluminum shift knob, aluminum sport pedals, red Type R driver’s meter and Type R plate with serial number.

Production, like its predecessor, will be handled by Honda of the U.K. Manufacturing in Swindon, England. The engine, on the other hand, is made by Honda of America Mfg. at its Anna, Ohio. Further details will be known closer to the car’s launch.
