Since becoming the Oxford English Dictionary’s Word of the Year in 2013, “selfie” has firmly established itself as a cultural staple. By now everyone thinks they know how to take the perfect selfie, but, as Ford has found out, that doesn’t mean we all know our perfect angle when it comes to road safety.

Ford recently hit the streets and asked people from a range of countries what their best angle was for taking a selfie. As expected, everyone had an opinion and was happy to demonstrate. However, when they put them behind the wheel of a Ford Focus and asked them to adjust the side and rear-view mirrors to the perfect angle for driving, the result wasn’t nearly as flattering. Most people thought they knew how to set their mirrors, but when Ford put them to the test on camera, it turned out many are in the dark about this simple but crucial way to stay safe on the roads.

Therefore, Ford has come up with 3 simple steps for adjusting your vehicles’ mirrors to their perfect angle. Follow these simple instructions to minimize blind spots and keep yourself and others safe on our roads, rest assured, you will be more confident on the road after you’ve found a better surrounding view of your vehicle.

• Position yourself in the driver’s seat. Adjust the rear view mirror so that you can see straight backwards.

• Lean your head to the side until it is almost touching the driver-side window. Adjust the driver-side mirror until you can just barely see the side of your car.

• Lean your head to the center console. Adjust the passenger-side mirror so that you can just barely see the side of your car.
