BMW and IBM to work on connected data for cars

When you see a smart car, whether it may be a self-driving car or just a car filled with gadgets, data is one key important factor. Somewhat similar to our smartphones, data is streaming through multitudes of servers around the world. For the case of a connected car, such as BMW, IBM hopes to be that middleman.

IBM has signed a deal with BMW to have the BMW CarData platform connect to IBM’s Bluemix cloud. The CarData platform allows for users to share some information to 3rd parties in order to fully utilise their services. IBM hopes to be the company to store and analyse the data from your BMW and then pass it on to other parties, with the driver’s consent.

Use cases for this includes having your CarData shared with your insurers or to the BMW service centre to constantly let them know when your car may require a service and prepare the parts before hand. For the case of insurers, you can share your driving data with them to perhaps help reduce your insurance premiums.

It seems IBM is getting aggresive as they are pushing the same technology out to other auto makers as well.
