Volkswagen axes the Scirocco! [+Videos]

Whyyyyyy dammit!! Apologies for the outburst, but just very recently I was talking to some of my peers about the VW brand here and they asked which was my favourite, and I said this one, the VW Scirocco

Oh well hell, actually we’d already mentioned that the possible axing of the Scirocco might happen, earlier this year…

Why do I like it? Well, have you noticed that latter-day Volkswagen cars are all starting to look alike from the front? Some are just bigger or smaller examples of their stable-mates e.g. Passat looks like Jetta, looks like Vento, looks like Polo, etc. But have a look at just how different the Scirocco is…

So is it any wonder then why the Scirocco has always been my favourite? Imagine this, in its entire lifespan that began in 1974, the Scirocco has only had three iterations, from the first generation:

To the second generation

And the third generation which we are most familiar with of course…

Here’s a bit of trivia: The gap between the introduction of the second generation Scirocco, and current generation above, is a staggering 27-years. Heck, even Rolls-Royce took only 7-years between the 7th and 8th generation Phantoms.

To me, that’s what made the Scirocco unique, not only did it not look like anything else from VW, it was rare, and also quite an amazing car to drive. So I guess I’m a little perturbed that Volkswagen AG is axing the model. Have a look at the one that started it all, thanks to DW:

According to Automotive News, October 2017 will be the last month that VW will produce the Scirocco, a model name that spans 43 years.

Goodbye Scirocco, maybe we’ll meet again in the future… I won’t hold my breath though. Did used-Scirocco values just skyrocket, or plummet?
