First up is the new 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine, now delivering 400 hp and 480 Nm, a healthy 33 hp increase over its predecessor. Coupled with Audi’s famed Quattro all-wheel drive system and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the updated Audi RS 3 Sportback completes the century sprint in just 4.1 seconds. Top speed is an electronically-limited 250 km/h, though Audi says that customers can request to have it unlocked, which grants the RS 3 Sportback to hit 280 km/h.

Visually, the new Audi RS 3 Sportback receives the company’s striking Singleframe front gloss black grille flanked by large air intakes and angular trims. Audi has redesigned the vertical blades in the front bumper, giving the front end a new wider look. For the 2017 model year, LED headlights are now standard, and customers can opt for the available matrix LEDs. Towards the rear end, the RS 3 Sportback gains a new RS rear spoiler, diffuser insert and large oval mufflers.

Sitting 25 mm lower to the ground than the Audi A3, the RS 3 Sportback also gets a 20 mm wider front track with flared wheel arches. 19-inch wheels with 235/35R19 rubbers come as standard. Brakes are 310 mm up front, which can be upgraded to carbon-fibre ceramic discs. Rear brakes are also 310 mm in diameter.

Moving to the interior, the Audi RS 3 Sportback features a pair of circular meter clusters with red needles and a centrally-located multi-info display. Optionally, buyers can also get the Audi virtual cockpit. Elsewhere, black Nappa leather upholstery comes as standard. Options include RS sports seat with a new contoured profile and integrated headrests and a touchpad integrated on the Audi rotary/push control.
