Lexus GS updated, now with more safety kit and new turbocharged engine!

Lexus Malaysia has updated their medium luxury sedan, the Lexus GS, with the company’s now-common 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. There are a total of six variants available.

The Lexus GS 200t range comprises of the GS 200t F SPORT, GS 200t Luxury and GS 200t Premium. These variants are a direct replacement for the older GS 250. The GS 200t range uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine that pushes out 241 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 350 Nm of torque from 1,650 rpm till 4,400 rpm. These figures represent 17% more power and 38% more torque compared to what was produced by the 2.5-litre engine in the previous GS 250.

Power is transferred to the rear wheels via an 8-speed Sports Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission. The transmission also has Uphill Downshift Control which selects the optimum gear for excellent drivability, while Downshift Lock-up Control maintains the lock-up condition to ensure a direct feel in relation to accelerator pedal operation.

Moving one level up to the GS 350 F Sport and GS 350 Luxury, these variant continue to use the company’s 3.5-litre V6 2GR-FKS engine, with direct injector that inject fuel directly into the cylinder together with port injectors. The V6 in the GS 350 pumps out 311 hp at 6,600 rpm and 380 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. The GS 350 also utlizes the 8-speed SPDS automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels.

Lastly, there’s the GS 300h, which shares its 2.5-litre 2AR-FSE 4-cylinder engine with the Camry Hybrid. Unlike the other Lexus GS variants, the sole hybrid variant here uses an E-CVT that balances performance and fuel economy.

All variant of the Lexus GS include a DRIVE mode selector which allows the driver to choose the engine characteristics for reducing fuel consumption or having sharper performance. Furthermore, all variants of the Lexus GS with the Adaptive Variable Suspension (Except for the GS 200t Premium) now includes a Customize mode, which allows drivers to specifically adjust Powertrain, Chassis and Air-Conditioning settings.

Outside, all variants of the Lexus GS now gains a pair of LED headlights. All variants get tripled L-shaped LED headlights, while the GS 200t Premium gets Bi-LED headlights. The Daytime Running Lights (DRL) are of LED type as well.

Lexus has also added Brake Hold Assist,  Blind spot monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) to the GS range, though the GS 200t Premium does not receive BSM and RCTA. TPMS is also a standard fitment for the Lexus GS range in Malaysia.
