At the on-going 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, Mazda has taken the wraps-off the all-new Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV. The fully redesigned model will be launched in Japan in February next year before being rolled out to global markets.

Launched in 2012, the CX-5 was the first new-generation model to feature Mazda’s SkyActiv technology and KODO design language. It has since grown into a core model that is sold in over 120 countries and accounts for approximately one quarter of Mazda’s global sales volume.

Mazda CX-5 now gets a brand new look and a selection of new technologies. The most obvious differences between the new model and its predecessor is the heavily updated exterior styling. It takes much of its inspiration from the larger CX-9 and the styling still looks gorgeous even on smaller model like the CX-5.

Depending on each market, the all-new Mazda CX-5 engine lineup consists of the Mazda SkyActiv-D 2.2 clean diesel engine, along with the SkyActiv-G 2.0 and SkyActiv-G 2.5 direct-injection petrol engines. The engines are paired with either the 6-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic or the 6-speed SkyActiv-MT manual transmission. These powertrains are expected to provide powerful acceleration with linear characteristics along with excellent fuel economy and excellent performance, while still being environmental friendly.

For the first time ever, the new CX-5 will feature G-Vectoring Control (GVC), the first technology in Mazda’s new SkyActiv-Vehicle Dynamics series. By adjusting engine torque in response to steering wheel action, it delivers unified control over lateral and longitudinal acceleration (G) forces and optimizes the vertical load on each wheel.

According to the automaker, GVC is particularly effective in SUVs, which can be prone to generating lateral forces due to their relatively high center of gravity. It achieves high levels of both vehicle responsiveness and stability, while also helping to reduce sideways sliding of the cabin occupants’ bodies and deliver a comfortable ride. You can read more about GVC here, since AF ed Chris went all the way to Japan earlier this year to experience it for himself!
