Toyota Australia has recently unveiled its latest generation Corolla Hybrid, which combines the drivetrain from the Prius into a Corolla hatchback.

Under the hood is a Prius-derived 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle petrol engine mated to an electric motor, which drives the front wheels via an E-CVT. Thanks to the hybrid powertrain, the Corolla Hybrid sips just 4.1 litre/100 km, allowing the Corolla Hybrid to achieve a theoretical driving range of almost 1,100 km.

Like the Prius, the Corolla Hybrid is capable of operating in petrol and electric modes alone, or a combination of both, subject to driving conditions. Around town, the official fuel economy at 3.9 litres/100 km is more than twice as good as that achieved by the already efficient automatic petrol-only variants at 8.0 litres/100 km.

Toyota Australia is offering a single variant of the Corolla Hybrid, with prices starting from AUD 26,990. Standard equipment includes dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, auto-levelling bi-LED headlamps, LED daytime running lamps and keyless smart entry and start, seven airbags, reversing camera, stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes, 16-inch alloy wheels and black fabric upholstery.
