Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate debuts, E 43 4Matic boasts 401 hp

Wagon lovers rejoice, as Mercedes-Benz has finally unveiled the fifth-generation W213 E-Class Estate, one that the company says encapsulates dynamic handling and spacious interior.

At launch, the new estate will be available with an entry-level E 200 with a four-cylinder petrol engine pushing out 184 hp plus a E 220 d with 194 hp. Moving one level up is the E 250 with 211 hp and 350 Nm. Later in Q4 2016, the E 200 d will debut with 150 hp accompanied by the E 350 d. Mercedes-Benz will also debut the E 400 4MATIC featuring a six-cylinder petrol engine that pushes out 333 hp and 480 Nm. All listed engines feature a 9G‑TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission at launch.

Also coming in the fourth quarter of this year is the Mercedes‑AMG E 43 4MATIC Estate, which outputs 401 ponies and 520 Nm from its 3.0‑litre V6 biturbo engine. The performance variant also gets shortened shift times, AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive and specially-tuned sports suspension. 0-100 km/h takes just 4.7 seconds, while top speed is electronically-limited to 250 km/h.

In terms of space, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate boasts a cargo volume of up to 1,820 litres. Given its sporty roof line, head room and elbow room in the rear are best in the class. The Stuttgart firm said that a third, folding bench seat for children can be had from as soon as the end of this year.

In addition to that, the rear seat backrest folds down in a 40:20:40 split as standard. To release the backrests, electric switches located in the load compartment and to the right and left next to the backrests. Additional add-ons include the EASY-PACK tailgate, which comes as standard fitment. This allows the boot to be opened and closed at the touch of a button for easy loading and unloading.

Mercedes-Benz has also given the E-Class Estate with standard self-leveling rear air suspension, which ensures that the Estate always stays flat, even when fully laden. All-round air suspension with Air Body Control can be had as an option.

Being the most practical variant in the E-Class lineup means that the Estate variant also features power-adjustable retractable and extendable trailer coupling with ESP trailer stabilisation and Crosswind Assist (optional). The trailer coupling is cleverly hidden from the rear bumper when not needed.

Visually, the front grille will differ depending on the equipment line and variant. The base version features the classic Mercedes radiator grille with the three-pointed star on the bonnet, as does the Exclusive line with a slightly different design. The Avantgarde and AMG Lines can be recognised by the central star on the sports radiator grille.

Kid safety is not forgotten as well, as the W213 E-Class Estate features the new KIDFIX XP child seat. The new model has been developed in cooperation with child seat manufacturer BRITAX RÖMER and is suitable for children aged between around four and twelve weighing from 15 to 36 kg. The backrest of the Mercedes-Benz child seat can be removed in accordance with Euro NCAP requirements.
