Audi Unveils The New A5 & S5 Coupé [+video]

The all-new Audi A5 and S5 Coupé recently made its world premiere at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt with a more distinctive visual identity from the A4 it is based on.

With the trademark wave-shaped shoulder line that is reminiscent of its predecessor, the all-new Audi A5 Coupé showcases perfectly balanced proportions with a long engine hood, stretched wheelbase and short overhangs that further highlight the pronounced wheel arches that underscore the vehicle’s sporting intentions. The sculpted Singleframe grille is also significantly flatter and wider than in the previous model, with optional LED or Matrix LED headlights with dynamic turn signals.

The Audi A5 Coupé is also significantly more efficient than its predecessor, due in part to a reduction in overall curb weight by as much as 60kg lighter than its predecessor based on advances in intelligent material composition and lightweight design. The second contributor to this coupé’s improved fuel consumption ratings is its sophisticated segment-leading aerodynamics, posting a slippery drag coefficient of just 0.25.

The new Audi A5 Coupé will launch with 5 engines; two TFSI and three TDI units, each developing between 190 hp to 286 hp and representing a performance increase of up to 17%, whilst also consuming up to 22% less fuel.

The manual 6-speed gearbox and the 7-speed S tronic are used with the 4-cylinder engines as well as the 218 hp 3.0 TDI, which can be specced with front- or all-wheel drive. The 8-speed tiptronic is reserved for the top spec petrol and diesel engine Audi A5 Coupés.

The Audi S5 Coupé on the other hand, is powered by a newly developed 3.0 TFSI V6 engine that churns 354 hp, sending power to all four wheels.

Being the most potent model currently in the range, the new S5 Coupé can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds. At the same time the newly developed turbo V6 engine claims to return a combined 7.3litre/100km.

The all-new chassis is one of the highlights of the Audi A5 Coupé, offering drivers optimal comfort with no compromise on performance or agility. Equally at home whether on winding mountain roads or long trips on the highway, the new Audi A5 Coupé now comes equipped with an electromechanical power steering for the first time, adapting according to the vehicle’s speed and providing highly precise road feedback. Additionally, Audi also offers an optional dynamic steering is also available, automatically adjusting gear ratios based on speed and steering angle, as well as an optional rear-axle sport differential for even more dynamic driving and precision.

As with all Audi vehicles, the Audi drive select dynamic handling system comes as standard, allowing the customization of engine and drivetrain settings to suit the driver’s personal preferences.

Inside the cabin, the new Audi A5 Coupé benefits from the increased dimensions and longer wheelbase, resulting in more generous space fordriver and passengers alike. As is typical for Audi vehicles, interior build quality is uncompromisingly high. High-quality materials in a wide range of colours provide underscore the premium character of the mid-sized model. The horizontal architecture of the instrument panel and the continuous air vent strip also help create a wide sense of space whilst optional ambient lighting highlights the interior with a choice of 30 adjustable shades.

The luggage compartment offers a volume of 465-liters, 10 liters more than with the previous model. The rear seat has a 40:20:40 split and can be easily folded forward using levers in the luggage compartment. Audi also offers the two-door coupé with optional gesture control for opening the luggage compartment lid via a foot motion. The optional trailer hitch is electrically released at the press of a button.

Moving to the driver’s seat, the new Audi A5 Coupé is now available for the first time with the optional Audi virtual cockpit, a 12.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1,440 x 540 pixels. Together with the MMI navigation plus including 8.3-inch monitor on the center console, it forms the central information unit. Customers choosing MMI navigation plus automatically also get the hardware module Audi connect and the new Audi connect SIM, a SIM card permanently installed in the car.

With the Audi smartphone interface, Apple Car Play and Android Auto bring the familiar smartphone environment to the car, if desired. The optional Audi phone box with wireless charging in the center armrest uses near-field coupling to link smartphones wirelessly to the vehicle’s antenna and enables inductive charging according to the Qi standard. For very discerning hi-fi fans, the Bang & Olufsen sound system with its 3D sound is available as an option.

The new Audi A5 Coupé now comes with a broad choice of driver assistance systems compared with the previous model, and nearly all of the systems are either completely new or have been extensively updated.

The predictive efficiency assistant helps the driver save fuel, Audi active lane assist helps keep the car on track in the driving lane, and the Stop & Go adaptive cruise control including traffic jam assist offers the driver relief in slow-moving traffic. New and important safety features include the park assist, cross traffic assist rear, exit warning, collision avoidance assist and turn assist as well as the Audi pre sense systems. Camera-based recognition of traffic signs rounds out the lineup.

Compared with the previous model, the list of standard equipment is even more generous in this new model. Among the features included are xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights, LED interior lights, the Audi MMI radio plus with 7-inch MMI color display, Bluetooth and USB charging function, the three-spoke multifunction steering wheel (including shift paddles in models with automatic transmission), height-adjustable belt feeds, the Audi drive select dynamic handling system and Audi pre sense city.

Audi will launch the new A5 and S5 Coupé in Germany and other European countries in September this year.
