Devel’s 3,000+ hp V16 is legit! [+video]

Devel was a newcomer at the 2013 Dubai Motor Show, with a rather ambitious new concept car called the Sixteen. Fine and dandy by that point, but Devel claimed that the Sixteen had 5,000 hp, in which the whole automotive industry dismissed it as nonsense. 5,000 hp in a road car? Yeah right.

That was two years ago, and Devel has released this new video of their custom-built V16 engine being dynoed.

Powering the Devel Sixteen is a custom-built 12.3-litre quad-turbocharged V16 engine by Steve Morris Engines. On race fuel, the engine pushes out a mental 4,515 horsepower at 6,900 rpm and 4,766 Nm of torque at 6,600 rpm. The turbos were cranked to 36 psi of boost for that numbers to be achieved.

On regular gas and just 20 psi of boost, the engine still manages an impressive 3,006 horsepower, a healthy advantage over the Bugatti Veyron. Steve Morris Engines claimed that their dyno couldn’t handle any more power, and the engine actually does make more than 5,000 ponies.

Engine aside, Devel still needs a transmission strong enough to put all the power down. Their claim of a 0-100 time of 1.8 seconds and a top speed of 560 km/h still seems quite far-fetched. Then again, who can actually fully utilize the claimed 5,000 horsepower on public roads?
