While people would normally assume that electric cars are boring and slow, (Don’t let Elon Musk hear you say that! – Ed.) students at the University of Stuttgart have proved them wrong as they set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 1.779 seconds!
The GreenTeam Formula Student participants achieved this result with an electric vehicle and bettered the previous record by 0.006 seconds which was in possession of ETH Zürich.
The 100kW all-wheel drive vehicle designed to race in the Formula Student competitions, is powered by four motors and a 6.62kWh battery package. Weighing only 160 kg, the power to weight ratio is 1.6 kg/kW. In comparison, a Formula 1 car has a power to weight ratio of 1.0kg/kW, Bugatti Veyron Super Sport has a power to weight ratio of 2.08 kg/kW, while the Porsche 918 Spyder has 2.5 kg/kW.
In order to qualify for a new record, the electric car must run in both directions. After several attempts, Priska Schmid set a new best time on behalf of GreenTeam Uni Stuttgart e.V. at the JadeWeserAirport located in the Northwestern part of Germany.
The record will be confirmed by Guinness World Records in the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime, watch how this electric marvel managed to shatter the 0-100km/h record below!
