Alfa Romeo Giulia officially unveiled [+video]

After the initial leak from yesterday, Alfa Romeo has officially unveiled the Giulia, a rear wheel drive 4-door executive sedan, aimed squarely at the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Making its global debut at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, near Milan, Alfa Romeo has chosen to debut the top-of-the-line Quadrifoglio Verde variant. With a Ferrari-inspired turbocharged V6 fitted under the front bonnet, total system output is rated at 510 horsepower, and allows the Alfa Romeo Giulia to sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. Despite the numbers, Alfa Romeo claims that the engine is “surprisingly fuel-efficient and implements an electronically controlled cylinder deactivation system.” Other engines include a new range of turbocharged 4-cylinder engines.

Boasting a perfect weight distribution of 50/50, multilink rear suspension and a unique front double wishbone suspension set up, the Alfa Romeo Giulia should offer excellent handling. They have also used a mix of carbon fibre, aluminium, plastic and aluminium composite materials throughout the construction of the car, which gives the Giulia a power-to-weight ratio of “remarkably lower than 3kg/hp“. Alfa Romeo has not released the official weight of the Giulia yet, but we estimate that the Giulia should weight less than its competitors, in which the car should weigh below 1,530 kg.

Other features of the Alfa Romeo Giulia include torque vectoring system paired to a double clutch “to allow the rear differential to control the torque delivery to each wheel separately“. Then there’s the Integrated Brake System, which according to Alfa Romeo, is “an innovative electromechanical system which combines stability control and a traditional servo brake for instantaneous brake response and consequent record-breaking stopping distances in addition to the all-important weight optimization“.
