With the launch of the 2016 Toyota Hilux slated to happen later this week in Thailand, it comes as no surprise that the amount of spyshots and leaked info has quadrupled. This time, we have a mid-range Toyota Hilux, out in the open (Image credit: www.hiluxrevothailand.com)

Now, you may be asking why would this be called the mid-range Toyota Hilux. Simple, we do know for a fact that the range-topping Toyota Hilux will have projector head lamps with LED daytime running lights, which this variant lacks. The alloy wheels also sport a different design from the range-topper.

The rest of the mid-range variant looks pretty much identical to the range-topping one, now let’s take a look inside.

This is perhaps the first time we are looking at the interior of the mid-range model. What we can tell is that even on the mid-range variant, buyers in Thailand will still get a push-start button, leather-wrapped multi function steering wheel, touchscreen headunit with Bluetooth connectivity and power-adjustable side mirrors.

In terms of the features list, there’s a lot to be had in the range-topping Toyota Hilux. It packs a lot of active and passive safety kit, like VSC, TRC, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Downhill Assist Control (DAC), TSC, Toyota Active Traction Control (A-TRC), ABS, EBD, Brake Assist and airbags. The Hilux will also be getting Follow-Me-Home lights, Power and Eco driving modes and back seat air conditioning.

Engine wise, the new Hilux will be powered by Toyota’s range of new GD diesel engines. Starting from the bottom is a 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine with 164 hp. The 2GD-FTV engine has 400 Nm of torque when paired to the six-speed automatic, and 343 Nm when paired to a five-speed manual.

Moving one level up is the 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine. At 3,400 rpm, the engine is capable of producing 174 horsepower. Torque is rated at 420 Nm when the engine is paired to the six speed manual, and 450 Nm when paired to the six speed automatic. All the engines can be optioned with either a 2WD or a 4WD system. Time will tell which versions Malaysia will be getting, but it’s likely only the automatic transmission will be offered for private use.

Stay tuned for the official unveiling of the 2016 Toyota Hilux, happening soon!
