Thanks to the knowledge gained during the development of the Porsche 918 Spyder, Porsche could be introducing a hybrid variant for the next generation 911.
Porsche global sales and marketing head Bernhard Maier said,“We have a lot of ideas, but we have not approved them for production yet. The 918 Spyder shows that Porsche has the capability to produce very convincing hybrid sports cars.”
With the Porsche 911 facing immense pressure from the BMW i8, it comes as to no surprise that Porsche is keen to give the 911 some firepower to keep its competition on their toes. With emission laws getting more and more strict, Porsche will have to rely on hybrid to remain competitive. For them, the hybrid solution makes sense, as it can improve performance, yet at the same time, reduce CO2 emissions.
Matthias Muller, Chief Executive Officer of Porsche said, “Maybe in the next generation. Why not? There is no reason against it and we will see whether we have some reasons to do it. We are doing some studies to see whether it can work, whether it will work. We will see.”
Porsche is already developing a new 4-cylinder boxer engine for the Cayman and Boxter models, while a 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is slated for both model’s facelift.
“We have a lot of opportunities but we cannot do everything because we are only a small company,” Muller continued. “It depends on the lifecycle and the cycle plan of Porsche, so that [the Cayenne] is the next opportunity to do that. Another opportunity will be in 2016 with the Panamera again.”
