Volvo has unveiled the most-powerful, ‘triple-charged’ 2.0-litre petrol engine ever created, which produces a whopping 444bhp! The new four-cylinder engine, part of Volvo’s new Drive-E engine series, has also successfully dethroned the 345bhp producing 2.0-litre engine from the Mercedes AMG A45 model from the title of the world’s powerful 2.0-litre engine.
This mighty engine is the result of collaboration between Volvo and suppliers AVL, Denso, and Volvo’s racing arm, Polestar Racing. The colossal 444bhp was courtesy of two conventional turbochargers combined together with an electrically powered ‘turbo-compressor’. That setup combines together with the dual fuel pump that produces a whopping 250 bar pressure on the engine. Turbo-lag is also non-existent as claimed by Volvo.
Volvo did not announce on when the new engine will be made available though. But with this new and powerful Drive-E engine series and coupled with its state-of-the-art safety features, Volvo may be well set to give the Germans a run for their money.
“It may sound odd, but this 444bhp powertrain concept is an important part of the Drive-E development program. Down-sizing must offer customers attractive and usable power for broad scale emissions reduction to work. Compact powertrains also free up space and weight in the structure of the car, which can be used for electrification and even further emissions reduction. And that is our ultimate ambition,” said Volvo’s research and development boss Dr. Peter Mertens.
Let’s just hope this isn’t just a lot of hot-air (pun intended), and if ever it becomes available, it goes into the right car with all-wheel-drive, and not front-wheel-drive as some motoring sites have claimed. 444bhp and FWD? That’s just nuts.
