Lotus D-segment sedan and SUV in the pipeline?

Lotus Group is currently mulling the possibility of entering new market segments by developing an SUV and a D-segment sedan reports Utusan Malaysia.

The new plan was devised by new Lotus Group CEO, Jean-Marc Gales and was presented at Proton’s Board of Directors meeting chaired by Tun. Dr. Mahathir Mohamad at the Proton Centre of Excellence (COE) recently.

Previously, the company had been involved with the development of a D-segment sedan with Vauxhall in 1990 called the Lotus Carlton (below) and also Opel version called Lotus Omega. It was powered by 3.6-litre V6 turbo engine which produces 377hp allowing it to sprint to a top speed of 283km/h.

The report also stated that Lotus is rekindling the idea of its APX prototype that was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006 although Gales was quick to note that the new SUV is not related to the previous Lotus concept presented at the Motor Show. Even if this rumour turns out to be true, we still have to wait for a while before anything of the sort materializes.
