Art of Speed Asia Goes Regional This Year

Besides those who were present to witness it, many would have heard of the event that brought the local customization scene to the next level – Art of Speed Malaysia; organized by Switchblade Kuala Lumpur, a rock and roll boutique and avid enthusiast of Kustom Kulture.

Since its opening in 2009, SwitchbladeKL, which has been promoting the ‘So-Cal’ sub culture in Malaysia, is now even more vibrant – giving vintage hot rods, choppers, American muscle cars, retro Japanese vehicles, classic cars, and the art and music revolving around this lifestyle more exposure.

Art of Speed Malaysia was the first Kustom Kulture Show in Malaysia that has progressed via a series of events and also promotional tours at neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and also Japan.

Past events have recorded tremendous support from local and international movers and shakers of the custom culture scene, as well as the members of the public.

Events held at Publika, Solaris Dutamas in 2012, Citta Mall, Petaling Jaya and Danga Bay, Johor Bahru in 2013 saw such an overwhelming response that the organizers have decided to hold monthly mini events including a Night Cruise at the Sepang International Circuit.

After championing the event on a local scale for two years, Art of Speed Asia 2014 now takes things a step further with international players starting to recognize the event. This year, the event will be held on a much bigger scale at Citta Mall in Ara Damansara on the 7th and 8th of June 2014.

Art of Speed Asia 2014 stays close to its roots, retaining the tagline “Celebrating Art in Automotive Culture” that highlights the crossover of lifestyle and art as championed by Art of Speed Malaysia but with more regional relevance.

Art of Speed Asia 2014 will also be a regional platform for enthusiasts around the region to gather and meet icons from beyond South East Asia. It also aims to inspire and market local creative products to international markets. This year, the event is supported by Tourism Malaysia, recognizing the burgeoning growth of visitors and fans of the custom culture scene from the region.

According to Datuk Musa Hj Yusof, the Director of Domestic Marketing of Tourism, Visit Malaysia Year 2014 aims to contribute to the realization of the Government’s target of receiving 36 million tourist arrivals and RM168 billion in tourist receipts by 2020, as outlined in the Malaysia Tourism Transformation Plan (MTTP) 2020 which is part of the National Key Economic Areas (NKEA). In conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014, the Government is targeting a total of 28 million in tourist arrivals and RM76 billion in tourist receipts. To achieve the target, more than 200 exciting events and festivals have been planned for the entire year to attract more tourists during the whole year campaign. Art of Speed Asia will be held to support the VMY2014 campaign. A special on-ground tour package is also designed to entice tourists from the region to visit the event and an extended holiday package.

The event is the brainchild of Asep Ahmad Iskandar, the Managing Director of Initium Sdn Bhd a turnkey event management company. He said, “We intend to create an event that takes a giant leap in quality of content that speaks to regional fans and brings them closer together while creating a regional platform to connect with a global audience. Art of Speed Asia 2014 will be unique as we will not only fly in the icons of the industry but also their vehicles and art works to inspire in our Show and Shine competition and the Art Gallery. Fellow enthusiast will also be able to chat with our Special Guest in the planned Kustoms & Coffee Talk sessions. All in all, a great interactive day out for all fans and the public making it a show not to be missed!”

Having evolved from a national event into a regional affair, Art of Speed Asia 2014, which is currently among the most prominent “custom culture” gathering in the region, will play host to the movers and shakers of the regional custom scene such as Mooneyes Japan, Rocky Auto Japan, Flat 4 Tokyo, Kutsom Kulture Produktion Japan, Speedhunters.com, Rough Crafts Taiwan and Air Runner Custom Paint Studio from Taiwan.

This year’s showcase will also include a Show and Shine competition, a custom motorcycle area, stage acts, an art gallery curated by Bone Alfie and the District Shop-Gallery with local and international artists, children and family activities which includes Giant Bubble, Tamiya, Hotwheels and Star Wars costumed charity phototaking, a Soapbox Show & Go!, a youth arena featuring skateboard and BMX and graffiti exhibition. Astro Awani will also launch the fifth season of their automotive show called InGear at this event.

Among other highlights are retailers at the marketplace, vintage and jeans market by PintuMerah and local brand bazaar by Tempatan Fest which in overall features more than 150 brands.

Participants in the Show and Shine competition stand a chance to win a trip to the Mooneyes Yokohama Hotrod and Custom Show in December, the Best of Show respectively in the Motorcycle and Automobile categories.
