Hyundai debuted the all-new Sonata in the New York Motor Show, showcasing the company’s new Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language. The new Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 has three main themes: fluid aesthetics, modern looks and a premium ambiance. Notably the new Sonata is enormous in size, the EPA (the US agency in charge of fuel economy and emissions) classifies it as a large car rather than the previous midsize category.

Judging from first impressions, Hyundai has turned the Sonata into a four-door coupe, or a Sportback. The slick sculpture from the Sonata means it has an impressive drag coefficient of 0.27, the lowest for a Hyundai. Through the usage of high-strength steel, there is an improvement of 41 per cent in torsional rigidity.

Engine choices depending if you refer force-induced or naturally aspirated engines. To start there a 2.4-litre in-line four-cylinder developing 185bhp, while for those who fancy turbocharged engines, there the 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit, capable to churn up 245bhp with 360 Nm of torque. All petrol engines will be mated with the six-speed automatic transmission, and word has it that Hyundai may introduce a hybrid powertrain for the Sonata.

The Sonata will be built at the company’s production facility in Alabama, United States and goes on sale this summer. Hyundai also gives an industry-leading warranty in the US, which includes an amazing ten year/160,000-km powertrain warranty).
