It appears that Volkswagen’s other forgotten hot hatch sibling, the SEAT Leon Cupra, is looking to unseat the Volkswagen Golf GTI to become the king of front-wheel drive cars. This occurred when the SEAT Leon Cupra 280 became the first FWD car to break the eight minute mark at the infamous Nurburgring. For the uninitiated, for every car that clocks under 8 minutes on that 20 KM circuit, that car is automatically categorized in the supercar category.

The SEAT Leon Cupra 280 is powered by the 2.0L TSI that powers the Golf GTI but was beefed up to produce 280 HP. Mated with the DSG transmission and equipped with an optional Performance Pack that includes Brembo brakes, specially designed 19-inch wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires have resulted to this car lapped the Nurburgring at an impressive 7:58.4.

However, with the emergence of Honda’s new Type R, the record books for the fastest front-wheel drive car may yet again been rewritten in the coming months.

Meanwhile, here’s a video from SEAT showcasing their achievement, proving this Spanish made car with German technology may been the fastest production front-wheel drive car on the planet.
