Nissan has gone nostalgic with the stunning IDx Freeflow Concept

It seems going retro is the latest trend in the automotive industry. Taking a step from the American car manufacturers of going retro just like how the current Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro looked like their originals, Nissan has also followed the path of retro with the unraveling of the IDx Freeflow Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The IDX Freeflow concept is basically Datsun 510 re-imagined with modern computer based modeling and minimalist design language. The new concept coupe spots the similar 4 small round lights and chrome bumpers is a reminiscent of a classic 510. On the back, there is a vertical panel and tail lights with three distinct elements inspired from the 510. If looked at closely, the new concept does take design cues of the original Nissan Skyline GT-R  S45 from the 70-ies.

No confirmation on the engine and powertrain yet, but sources revealed that it might be powered by a high-performance, eco-friendly 1.6L direct-injection turbocharged engine together with a sporty CVT with 6-speed manual shift mode and synchronized rev control. This may be a direct response from Nissan to the ever popular small affordable but fun coupes like the Toyobaru twins. An innovation from Nissan’s tuning arm, NISMO should make this coupe more interesting and fun (as shown below).

Where Toyota has styled the successful GT86/BRZ coupe based on Toyota’s legendary AE86, Nissan has may have followed the similar pattern. But with the retro flair from Datsun’s bloodline, this may make the new Nissan coupe even more special.
