Wagon aficionados take note! Mercedes-Benz has recently taken the wraps off the new CLA Shooting Brake. Unlike other carmakers around the world, Mercedes-Benz has more than two types of compact car and this includes A-. B-, CLA and GLA-Class. The CLA Shooting Brake is the fifth member join the Mercedes-Benz compact car family and the introduction of the new compact car models has seen the the German company become palpably younger in appeal – around the world, the average age of its customers apparently has fallen, which also explains the reason why these types of Mercedes do not appeal your grandfathers anymore.

Around the world, some 900,000 vehicles of the new generation of compact models are now in customer hands, including 100,000 CLA models. The conquest sales rate for the CLA worldwide stands at around 50%.

From the picture above you’ll notice that the Shooting Brake, just like the standard CLA four-door coupe, has an elegant front end with a long bonnet and wide, single-bar front grille. Both models measure in at the same length of 4630mm long, 1777mm wide and 1435mm tall and also share the same 2,699mm wheelbase, with the only visual changes starting from the B-pillar. The more athletic body benefits practicality, too. Luggage capacity has increased from 470 litres to 495 litres, while folding the rear seats flat widens up the space to 1354 litres.

The CLA Shooting Brake will initially be available with a choice of 2 diesel and 4 petrol engines as well as with 4MATIC all-wheel drive; a four-cylinder 2.1-litre turbodiesel engine delivering 136hp and 300Nm in the CLA 200 CDI and 177hp and 350Nm in the CLA 220 CDI.

The petrol engine lineup kicks off with a 1.6-litre rated at 122hp and 200Nm in the CLA 180 and 156hp and 250Nm in the CLA 200. Up next is a 2.0-litre with 211hp and 350Nm in the CLA 250 which can also be had with an optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. All versions are equipped as standard with the ECO start/stop function and are Euro 6-compliant.

The gem in the range is the Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake that makes use of 4-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 360hp and 450 Nm torque. Output of the engine is sent to a 4MATIC system through a 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT gearbox, which enables the hot wagon hit 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds before reaching an electronically-capped top speed of 250 km/h.
