Downsizing engine capacities is currently the trend when it comes to modern engines, so it comes as no surprise that Kia has also announced a new 1.0-litre engine, set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The new engine will debut in the Kia Cee’d GT Line.
The new engine will retain the Kappa name, but now features T-GDi (Turbo gasoline direct injection). This little 3 cylinder engine is good for 118 horsepower and 172 Nm of torque. The same engine will find its way into other Kia models in the near future.
It features a newly-developed laser-drilled injector with six individual holes. These holes are laid out in a pyramid shape to provide an even spread of fuel and air throughout the cylinder. Coupled with a high-pressure pump, these new injectors can provide fuel injection pressure of up to 200 bar.
Kia says that the engine is still awaiting certification from the EU, but is confident that it will provide lower CO2 emissions than the 1.6-litre GDi engine found in other cee’d models.
We are certainly excited at the prospect of seeing Kia models getting powered by a small 1.0-litre T-GDi engine locally, but we’re still unsure about the new Ford Mondeo being powered by a 1.0-litre engine though, stay tuned for that!
