Honda recalls 2.23 million vehicles in America to replace Takata airbag inflators

New CR-V fitted with 6 airbags

Honda is issuing a recall for over 2 million Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States to replace the PSDI-5 Takata driver front airbag inflators installed in those vehicles. So far there’s no reports of Takata inflator ruptures in Honda or Acura vehicles worldwide.

The company plans to replace all of these recalled inflators with new parts for free of charge however, due to the large volume of new inflators needed to repair vehicles with approximately 2.23 million units, the necessary replacement parts will not become available until mid-2016.

As a result, owners of affected vehicles will be informed of the recall in an initial notification letter within 60 days. Once replacement parts become available, Honda will send a second notification letter to owners to send their vehicles for repair at their local authorized dealer. The second round of notifications will prioritize older model year vehicles located in certain high humidity areas and will expand to other areas of the country as more replacement parts become available.

Models included in the PSDI-5 driver front inflator recall in the United States (certain specific vehicles only):

2005-2012 Acura RL
2007-2011 Honda CR-V
2007-2016 Acura RDX (early production MY 2016 vehicles only)
2007-2014 Honda Ridgeline
2009-2014 Honda Fit
2009-2014 Acura TL

2010-2013 Acura ZDX
2011-2015 Honda CR-Z

With this new recall, The Japanese automaker now have a total of approximately 8.51 million Honda and Acura vehicles have been or now are subject to replacement of a Takata driver and/or passenger front airbag inflator in the United States. It will probably take them years as millions of these parts to be fully replaced!
