2016 Audi A4 unveiled, less weight & more tech!

Audi has pulled the wraps off the new A4, which has been reworked both inside and outside which sets to be the benchmark in its segment. Audi has put extra emphasis on reducing CO2 emissions during the development of the new A4.

The first step Audi took when developing the new A4 was improving the aerodynamics. As a result, the new Audi A4 can now boast the best drag coefficient (Cd) in its class, at 0.23. As mentioned earlier, the CO2 emissions too have been lowered, with the A4 Sedan 2.0 TDI ultra releasing 95 grams per kilometer, while the 2.0 TFSI with 190 horsepower emits 109 g/km. Depending on engine, some variants of the 2016 Audi A4 is up to 120 kilograms lighter.

Power wise, Audi has claimed that engine output has increased 25%, but with a drop of 21% in fuel consumption. For its Euro debut, Audi has launched the new 2016 A4 with seven engines, three TFSI engines, and four TDI engines. All engines are now Euro 6 compliant. Output ranges from 150 hp all the way to 272 hp. Audi also plans to debut an e-tron variant of the A4 which can use natural gas as a propellant. Audi’s newly developed e-gas can also be used.

Audi has not tampered with the body lines of the new 2016 A4, so at a quick glance, it is still much recognizable as one. Drawing inspirations from the Q7, R8 and the newly launched TT, the 2016 Audi A4 features a sharper front end design and large trapezoid front grille. Xenon headlights are a standard fitment, and customers can option for LED headlights and matrix LED headlights. The rear end of the 2016 Audi A4 has also been updated, but maintains the predecessor’s design cues. 48 LEDs can be found on each tail lights, which totals up to 96 LEDs for both.

Moving inside, the new 2016 Audi A4 sports the longest interior with the most shoulder space amongst its competitors. For the first time ever, the Audi A4 will come with interior LED lighting as standard. Like the newly launched Audi TT, the 2016 Audi A4 can be optioned with the Audi virtual cockpit, which replaces the conventional meter cluster with a 12.3-inch LCD display.

Other interior updates include the optional MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch and a large 8.3-inch monitor. This system uses a touchpad for navigation and is similar to navigating a smartphone. Owners can charge their Qi-compatible phones via the Qi charger inside the Audi phone box.

Audi has dropped their multitronic transmission in favour of their latest seven speed S-tronic dual clutch unit. All variants, excluding the 3.0 TDI variant will be getting the new S-tronic transmission. The diesel variant will get a revised eight speed S-tronic. Audi will also be offering a new manual transmission for the A4, which won’t be available here. Like before, unless specified with the Quattro option, the Audi A4 will come standard with front wheel drive.

As for the Audi A4 Avant, Audi has claimed that it offers the largest boot space in its class, with a total of 505 litres with the rear seats up. With the rear seats folded down, that number increases to 1,510 litres. Buyers of the wagon variant will benefit from the electric luggage-space cover and electric tail gate, which comes as standard equipment. Audi says that buyers can choose to have a gesture control for the rear tail gate, which according to Audi, is “a proximity sensor in the rear bumper reacts to a kick motion so that the trunk lid or tailgate unlocks and opens automatically when the key is recognized.
