ASEAN NCAP releases Q3 2014 results for 4 models [+video]

Honda Jazz crash test

The Association of Southeast Asian Countries New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) recently released the crash test results of four cars from different automakers for third quarter of 2014.

The four cars that underwent the latest ASEAN NCAP tests are the Honda City (2014), Honda Jazz  (2014), Tata Vista and Perodua Axia. Both Honda City and Honda Jazz are available in our local market while  Tata Vista is produced in India and only available in Indonesia and Myanmar. Meanwhile, Perodua Axia is the first car in ASEAN NCAP history to be launched into our local market with ASEAN NCAP results. It will be the most affordable 4-star car (in both AOP & COP) in the ASEAN region, with the price tag of only MYR 24,900.

The result summary are as below;

1. Perodua Axia – 4-Star in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP); 4-Star in Child Occupant
Protection (COP).

2. Tata Vista – 3-Star in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP); 3-Star in Child Occupant
Protection (COP).

Dual-rating:
1. Honda City (2014) – 5 and 4-Star in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP); variants without
ESC and/or both front occupants’ SBR are rated 4-Star AOP. 4-Star in Child Occupant
Protection (COP).
2. Honda Jazz (2014) – 5 and 4-Star in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP); variants without
ESC and/or both front occupants’ SBR are rated 4-Star AOP. 4-Star in Child Occupant
Protection (COP).

The 2014 Honda Jazz and the Honda City scored 15.58 and 15.8 respectively out of 16 in Adult Occupant Protection, both securing 4 stars in AOP and 4 stars in COP with a compliance rating of 71%. While the above ratings were secured by their respective base variants with 2 standard airbags, the 6-airbag top-end variant secured 5 stars in AOP and COP. It’s worth mentioning that the Honda City broke the record for the highest points ever achieved in ASEAN NCAP, beating previous holder, the Ford Fiesta’s, score of 15.78 points.

The India-made Tata Vista was the only Indian-origin car to undergo the ASEAN NCAP. It scored 9.24 out of 16 in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), securing 3 out of 5 stars and 3 out of 5 stars in COP (Child Occupant Protection) with a compliance rating of 53%. The GZX trim that was tested featured both driver and front passenger airbags.

Tata Vista NCAP

The soon-to-be launched Perodua Axia scored a respectable 12.91 out of 16 in AOP, securing 4 stars in AOP and COP. It’s considered to be the most affordable vehicle to launch in the market with 4 stars. The variant tested came fitted with a driver and a passenger airbags.

ASEAN NCAP is expecting more affordable cars in the future with commendable safety specification and crash test performance. Also, at the same time ASEAN NCAP is putting the challenge to car manufacturers to offer 5-Star car at an affordable price.
